Preceding the Royal Society of Canada’s Celebration of Excellence is an event hosted at the Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG) by the College of New Scholars and the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies at UBC. This event is being presented in connection with the upcoming Insurgence/Resurgence exhibit at the gallery. This exhibit is part of the WAG’s mandate to showcase contemporary Indigenous art, including Inuit art, and part of the College’s push to connect with scholars and artists from the Canadian Indigenous scholarly and musical networks. Many of the featured artists explore themes of activism, resistance, and survival in cultural, social, and political contexts, creating a compelling and thought-provoking exhibit.
The College is thrilled to present Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, a renowned Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg scholar, writer and artist, who has been widely recognized as one of the most compelling Indigenous voices of her generation. Her work breaks open the intersections between politics, story and song—bringing audiences into a rich and layered world of sound, light, and sovereign creativity.
